| Are you Qualified to treat Pregnant Clients? |
| Did you know that if you do not have a specific Pregnancy Massage qualification your insurance policy probably does not cover you to massage clients during pregnancy? |
| It seems obvious, but if you qualified in Swedish Massage/Body Massage some years ago it was often included as part of your course that you could massage clients during pregnancy simply by adapting their position to make them comfortable. If you are following those guidelines but have not yet up-dated your skills with a Pregnancy Massage course, please check your insurance policy – you may not be insured!! |
| Things to take into consideration when deciding whether to up-skill are : Without the qualification If an existing massage client becomes pregnant you cannot massage her again until after she has given birth – and maybe longer if she is breastfeeding or had a C-section. As a result, you have lost that client for 9-12 months – or maybe forever, if she has gone to another massage therapist for treatment during the pregnancy. With the qualification |
| 2. Most clients book for a course of 8 treatments – monthly for months 4-7 and every 2 weeks during months 8 & 9 |
| 3. You can continue their treatment while breastfeeding (anything from 3 months to 2 years after giving birth) |
| 4. You can charge more for Pregnancy Massage – it is an Advanced, Specialised, treatment and not every massage therapist offers it |
| 5. It is an easier treatment for you, the therapist, as your body position is less strain on your body |
| 6. You can use the routine or non-pregnant clients too – for example, anyone who has had an operation on their tummy or breasts |
